About the Hospital
Zhongshan Hospital of Xiamen University, founded in 1928, was established by patriotic overseas Chinese and local dignitaries to uphold Dr. Sun Yat-sen's spirit of "the world belongs to all, benefiting society," with Dr. Lim Boon Keng, then President of Xiamen University and a medical expert, serving as its first dean. In 2005, it became the first affiliated hospital of Xiamen University and has developed into a large tertiary A-level comprehensive hospital integrating medical treatment, education, research, and preventive healthcare. The hospital covers approximately 57,000 square meters with a building area of 171,000 square meters, has 2,500 approved beds, operates 50 clinical and medical technology departments, and employs over 2,900 staff members including 612 senior experts. With gastroenterology as its core strength, the hospital possesses 4 National Clinical Key Specialties and 15 Provincial Clinical Key Specialties; its Department of Gastroenterology is the only National Clinical Key Specialty in this field in Fujian Province, maintaining advanced national standards in intestinal microecology, medical artificial intelligence, and major digestive disease prevention and treatment. In June 2025, the hospital officially launched its International Medical Department, offering "Five Ones" premium services for domestic and international patients with 24-hour hotline support, direct insurance billing, and partnerships with top domestic and international institutions to provide a multi-tiered healthcare system with international medical teams and multidisciplinary remote consultations. As an affiliated hospital of Xiamen University, it undertakes clinical teaching and research responsibilities, serving as a teaching hospital for multiple institutions including Fujian Medical University, and has secured over 300 research projects in the past five years with National Natural Science Foundation grants ranking first in the province for six consecutive years.
