About the Hospital
The Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University, founded in 1881 as Huishih Hospital established by the British Presbyterian Church, is the first Western medicine hospital in Southern Fujian and the birthplace of modern medicine in Quanzhou region. As the only provincial hospital outside Fuzhou directly under Fujian province, the hospital has developed for over 140 years across three centuries, consistently upholding the spirit of "Benevolent Heart Benefiting the World." It is now a tertiary A-level comprehensive hospital and the leading institution of the Southern Fujian Regional Medical Center. The hospital operates two campuses—Licheng and Donghai—with a total of 2,000 beds, covering 347 acres, employing 2,500 staff members including 331 senior professionals and 455 with master's or doctoral degrees, serving over 1.5 million outpatient visits and nearly 70,000 surgeries annually. In 1981, with provincial government approval, the hospital pioneered the establishment of an Overseas Chinese Outpatient Department and Ward, serving Southeast Asian compatriots for over 40 years and accepting patients from the United States, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The hospital maintains cooperative relationships with New York University, Yamanashi Medical University of Japan, and Vrije Universiteit of the Netherlands. Known for its leading specialties including Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Rheumatology and Immunology, Cardiology, and Urology, the hospital houses the Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Lung Stem Cells and the Fujian Provincial University Key Laboratory of Sleep Medicine, serves as the Second Clinical Medical College of Fujian Medical University, and was recognized as a National Civilized Unit in 2020.
