Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a comprehensive tertiary Grade-A hospital integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, public health, and hospital management. As the first hospital in Hubei Province designated jointly by the provincial government, foreign affairs office, and health commission for foreign patient services, it is also the supporting institution of a National Medical Center and has undertaken the medical guarantee tasks for visiting foreign heads of state for nearly 70 years. Founded in 1900 by German physician Dr. Erich Paulun in Shanghai and relocated to Wuhan in 1955, the hospital was renowned from its inception for its German-style medical education — as early as 1915, its medical graduates were recognized by Germany's Ministry of Education as academically equivalent to those of German medical universities. Over more than a century, the hospital has cultivated the motto of "Pursue Truth, Advance Together" and core values of "Preciseness & Fact-seeking, Innovation & Renovation, Patient-first & Devotion, Eagerness & Excellence," and its research achievements have been acclaimed as "the Tongji Phenomenon" in China's medical field. The hospital now operates four campuses — Hankou, Optical Valley, Sino-French New City, and Junshan — with 65 clinical and paramedical departments, 1 National Medical Center, 11 National Key Disciplines, 43 National Key Clinical Specialties, and over 10,000 employees including 2 academicians, 80 recipients of national talent programs, and 98 holders of special government allowances. Leading specialties include Obstetrics & Gynecology, Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Anesthesiology, with 43 National Key Clinical Specialties covering all major fields. The International Medical Service (IMS), established in 2012 as the first in Hubei, has served tens of thousands of patients from 44 countries and regions, providing full translation and accompaniment, chief physician responsibility, and a team-based model (physician + pharmacist + rehabilitation specialist + nutritionist + psychologist + nurse), with international payment and insurance direct billing. In 2012, Tongji became the first Asian hospital to pass Germany's KTQ certification, and in 2013 was designated as an International Emergency Rescue Center Hospital by the National Health Commission.
