Zhongshan City People's Hospital, established on March 16, 1950, is the largest and most comprehensive hospital in Zhongshan City, serving as a tertiary Grade-A hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, and preventive healthcare. As the only prefecture-level hospital in China approved to perform heart, liver, kidney, pancreas, and small intestine transplants simultaneously, the hospital has completed nearly 2,000 organ (tissue) transplants to date, including over 150 heart transplants, 400+ liver transplants, and 900+ kidney transplants. In 2001, it pioneered ECMO technology in mainland China, achieving over 1,300 successful cases by December 2024. In 2022, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao (Zhongshan) ECMO Treatment Center was established, followed by the Zhongshan ECMO Research Institute in 2023. The hospital covers 83,800 square meters with a floor area of approximately 179,000 square meters and 2,060 open beds, featuring tree-shaded grounds and an elegant, comfortable environment. It houses 86 clinical departments and 23 medical technology departments covering all clinical disciplines, with more than 3,950 employees. The hospital boasts 1 national key clinical specialty construction project, 6 Guangdong provincial key clinical specialty construction projects, and 11 provincial key specialties. Since 1993, the hospital has conducted six "Open Heart" missions with Australian medical teams, became a sister hospital with Queen's Medical Center in Hawaii in 1998, and signed friendship hospital agreements with Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan, Carème Hospital in France, and Kiang Wu Hospital in Macao. It has also established academic cooperation with Gothenburg University in Sweden, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the USA, and Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 1999, it became one of the first prefecture-level hospitals approved by the Ministry of Personnel to establish a postdoctoral research workstation. In June 2024, "Creation and Application of Precision Prevention and Treatment Strategy for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma" won the National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Prize). In 2020, it received the "National Advanced Collective for COVID-19 Prevention and Control" award from the CPC Central Committee, State Council, and Central Military Commission. In October 2025, the Hong Kong and Macao Residents Health Service Center was officially opened, providing commercial insurance direct billing and cross-border remote consultation services, upholding the medical spirit of "Benevolence, Excellence, Virtue, and Salvation."
