About the Hospital

The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University was founded in 1903. It is a public tertiary grade-A comprehensive hospital integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, prevention, and healthcare. As the main institution of the National Center for Respiratory Medicine, the hospital undertakes vital national-level respiratory disease diagnosis and treatment technology guidance and emergency rescue functions, and serves as the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases. Academician Zhong Nanshan serves as honorary director of the center. The hospital made major contributions during the fight against SARS and COVID-19, earning international renown. After over 120 years of development, the hospital has grown from a local hospital into a national-level respiratory medicine center. Adhering to the spirit of "Benevolence as Foundation, Sincerity as Strength," it leads the nation in respiratory disease diagnosis and treatment and is acclaimed as "the banner of Chinese respiratory medicine." The hospital currently operates three campuses—Yanjiang Campus, Datansha Campus (National Center for Respiratory Medicine), and Haiyin Campus—with 1,500 open beds. The Hengqin Campus International Medical Department was inaugurated in May 2024. It holds six national key clinical specialties: Respiratory Medicine, Thoracic Surgery, Critical Care Medicine, Urological Surgery, Allergy Department, and Oncology Department, with 44 clinical departments and 18 medical technology departments. The hospital employs 3,021 staff members, including 520 senior professionals, 26 doctoral student supervisors, and 127 master's student supervisors. Key specialties include respiratory medicine (leading nationally), thoracic surgery, critical care medicine, urological surgery, allergy department, and oncology department. The hospital has an international patient service team providing one-stop services including multilingual support, appointments, translation, medical records, and travel arrangements. As the clinical college of Guangzhou Medical University, it trains doctoral and master's students and has a postdoctoral research workstation. Annual outpatient and emergency visits exceed 2 million, annual discharges exceed 100,000, and annual surgeries exceed 50,000. Academician Zhong Nanshan's team received honors including the National Advanced Collective for Fighting COVID-19 and National Advanced Worker. The hospital received honors including National Center for Respiratory Medicine and National Health System Advanced Collective.
