About the Hospital

Founded in 1971, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (formerly the Third Affiliated Hospital of Zhongshan Medical University) is a large comprehensive tertiary Grade-A hospital directly under the National Health Commission, serving as an important medical center in South China with multiple functions including medical treatment, medical education, scientific research, and preventive healthcare. Over more than 50 years of development, the hospital has formed a strategic "three cities, four campus" layout including the main campus (Tianhe Campus), Lingnan Campus, Yuedong Campus, and Zhaoqing Campus (under construction). The Tianhe and Lingnan campuses cover an area of 149,000 square meters, with a construction area of 271,000 square meters; Yuedong campus covers an area of about 166,000 square meters with a total construction area of 138,000 square meters. Upholding the motto of "Treat the disease, heal the body, cure the mind; save people, save the nation, save the world," the hospital is committed to providing high-quality, efficient, and humanistic medical services. The hospital has 5 national key disciplines (Internal Medicine-Neurology, General Surgery, Endocrinology, Otorhinolaryngology, Neurology), 7 national key clinical specialties (Endocrinology, Traditional Medicine for Liver Disease, General Surgery, Urology Surgery, Infectious Diseases, Rheumatology and Immunology, Clinical Care), and 25 Guangdong provincial key clinical specialties. The hospital leads the nation in hepatology, psychiatry, and rheumatology immunology, with the hepatology discipline group having significant advantages in severe hepatitis treatment, minimally invasive liver cancer treatment, and liver transplantation. The hospital currently has four campuses with over 2,880 beds (Tianhe Campus 1,600 beds, Lingnan Campus 600 beds, Yuedong Campus 680 beds, Zhaoqing Campus 1,500 beds under construction). Tianhe and Lingnan campuses have a total of 3,864 employees, including 3,265 health professional and technical personnel and 444 senior title staff. The daily outpatient and emergency department visits in Tianhe Campus is about 12,000, and about 2,600 in Lingnan Campus. Yuedong Hospital started to operate on October 8, 2014, which shares high-quality medical resources with the Tianhe Campus. It has a Biotherapy Center among the first batch approved to conduct stem cell clinical research in China, and maintains close academic exchanges with top international medical institutions. As the Third Clinical Medical College of Sun Yat-sen University, it has 30 master's degree programs, 23 doctoral programs, and one postdoctoral program; there are 144 graduate student supervisors and 62 doctoral supervisors. The hospital has been awarded honorary titles such as "National Baby-Friendly Hospital", "Guangdong Province Civilized Hospital", "National Leading Hospital in Culture Development", "Advanced Group of National Health System", and "Seventh National Civilized Unit".
