About the Hospital
The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (Guangdong Gastrointestinal Hospital) traces its origins to the Yuancun Workers' Clinic established in June 1964. After several name changes, it was transferred to Sun Yat-sen University in February 2007 and officially inaugurated on June 6, 2007, becoming China's premier gastrointestinal and anal specialty hospital. As a large comprehensive tertiary Grade-A hospital directly affiliated with Sun Yat-sen University, the hospital motto is "Shou Zhen" (Upholding Truth), committed to building a research-oriented hospital with distinctive specialty features. The hospital ranks among the national leaders in colorectal cancer surgery volume and inflammatory bowel disease diagnosis and treatment volume (self-reported as "first globally"), has led the development of multiple national guidelines including the "China Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Standards," and holds a leading position in gastrointestinal and anal disease diagnosis and treatment in China. The hospital has 3 national key clinical specialties (General Surgery, Gastroenterology, Reproductive Medicine Center) and 13 Guangdong provincial key clinical specialties, with the largest reproductive medicine center in South China. The hospital now operates three campuses: the Financial City Campus (headquarters) at 26 Yuancun Erheng Road, Tianhe District; the North Campus at 17 Shougouling Road, Tianhe District; and the Knowledge City Campus at 688 Zhiming Road, Huangpu District (trial operation since February 2025). The gastrointestinal and anal specialty has 850 dedicated beds, 55 clinical departments, and 15 clinical platform departments. The colorectal and anal surgery department alone has 10 sub-specialties. The hospital has 34 doctoral supervisors, 87 master's supervisors, and 81 senior professionals. The hospital has established the first colorectal cancer MDT clinic in South China. In 2018, it was designated as one of the first pilot hospitals for tumor multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment by the National Health Commission. In March 2026, it was selected as one of the first pilot hospitals for international medical services in Guangdong Province. As the Sixth Clinical Medical College of Sun Yat-sen University, the hospital undertakes important teaching tasks including undergraduate, graduate, and resident standardized training.
