About the Hospital
Founded in 1835 as "Boji Hospital," Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University is the first Western medicine hospital in China and the birthplace of Western medicine and Western medical education in the country. Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the great revolutionary pioneer, studied medicine here under the name "Yixian" and engaged in revolutionary activities. The Boji Medical School established in 1866 was the earliest Western medical school in China. As a large comprehensive tertiary Grade-A hospital directly under the National Health Commission, it serves as an important medical center in South China, undertaking multiple functions including medical treatment, medical education, scientific research, and preventive healthcare. The hospital has 17 national key clinical specialties (Endocrinology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Endemic Disease, General Surgery, Urology, Emergency Medicine, Oncology, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Cardiovascular Medicine, Otorhinolaryngology, Neurology, Organ Transplantation, Medical Imaging, Rehabilitation Medicine, Pediatrics, Dermatology) and 26 Guangdong provincial key clinical specialties, and holds transplantation qualifications for four major organs: heart, lung, liver, and kidney. Upholding the "Boji" spirit with the mission of "Benevolent Heart and Skilled Hands, Saving the World and Helping People," the hospital consistently ranks among the top in the Fudan University China Best Hospital Rankings, with multiple specialties enjoying national renown. The hospital currently has four campuses and one outpatient department with over 3,000 beds, 55 clinical departments, 15 medical technology departments, and over 5,400 employees. It has established a Precision Oncology Treatment Center, Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Consultation Center, and Difficult Disease Consultation Center, maintaining extensive international cooperation with medical institutions across multiple countries and regions. As the Second Clinical Medical College of Sun Yat-sen University, it cultivates hundreds of medical professionals annually. Annual total visits exceed 3.02 million, annual surgeries exceed 100,000, and annual discharges exceed 120,000. The hospital has received numerous honors including National Advanced Collective in Medical and Health System, National Trusted Demonstration Hospital, and Guangzhou's Most Popular Tertiary Hospital. In March 2026, it was selected as one of the first batch of Guangdong International Medical Service Pilot Hospitals.
