About the Hospital
Founded in 1910 by American medical missionary Dr. Paul Todd, The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University originated from the Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Public Medical School. As a comprehensive tertiary Grade-A hospital directly under the National Health Commission, it is one of the largest and most powerful hospitals in South China. Upholding the motto of "Treat the disease, heal the body, cure the mind; save people, save the nation, save the world," the hospital has developed over more than a century into one of China's top-tier hospitals. As a candidate for the National Medical Center, the hospital has 5 National Key Disciplines (Nephrology, General Surgery, Neurology, Endocrinology, Otorhinolaryngology) and 36 National Key Clinical Specialties, and is a national pilot hospital for high-quality development. The hospital has been rated "A++" in the National Performance Assessment of Tertiary Public Hospitals for four consecutive years, with Clinical Medicine as a "Double First-Class" discipline ranking in the top 0.5‰ globally by ESI. In 2004, it was recognized as "the most trusted mainland Chinese medical institution by Hong Kong people." The hospital consists of the Headquarters, Huangpu Division, Nansha Division, and Huiya Hospital, jointly building National Regional Medical Centers with Guangxi and Guizhou, with over 3,000 beds, 65 clinical departments, 18 medical technology departments, and over 8,000 employees including more than 1,200 senior professionals and one CAS academician. Multiple disciplines including Organ Transplantation, Gynecology, Cardiovascular Medicine, and Gastroenterology lead the nation. The International Medical Center at Nansha Division has introduced a commercial insurance direct billing platform, serving thousands of international patients from 40 countries and regions, with partnerships with over forty top global medical institutions. As the First Clinical Medical College of Sun Yat-sen University, it cultivates hundreds of medical professionals annually. Annual outpatient visits exceed 4 million, annual surgeries exceed 150,000, and annual discharges exceed 200,000.
