The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University

The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University traces its origins to the Zhuhai Medical Center established in 1992, officially becoming a directly affiliated hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in 2002, and was incorporated into the Ministry of Education's tertiary budget unit in 2024. As the only directly affiliated hospital of Sun Yat-sen University on the west bank of the Pearl River Estuary, it is a large comprehensive tertiary Grade-A hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, preventive healthcare, and translational medicine research, and is a provincial high-level hospital supported by the Guangdong and Zhuhai governments. The hospital covers an area of 220,000 square meters with a floor area of 390,000 square meters, operating 2,300 beds with plans for 3,000 beds, making it the largest comprehensive hospital in Zhuhai. Upholding Sun Yat-sen University's motto of "Study extensively, inquire carefully, think clearly, argue rationally, practice earnestly," the hospital is committed to becoming a medical center on the west bank of the Greater Bay Area. It houses the largest Interventional Medicine Center and Blood Purification Center in the west bank of the Pearl River, and is the first hospital in Zhuhai with liver, kidney, and lung transplantation qualifications. Among the 10 directly affiliated hospitals of Sun Yat-sen University, it has the closest land connection and most convenient transportation to Hong Kong and Macao. As a medical cooperation unit for the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Macao and the Macao Garrison, it was approved as a designated medical institution for the "Hong Kong and Macao Medical and Device Communication" policy in 2024 and became a pilot hospital for the "Hong Kong Elderly Health Care Voucher" program in 2025. The Phoenix International Medical Center provides high-end international medical services with direct payment functions with over 30 insurance companies. The hospital is also a designated international medical rescue unit and the only designated treatment facility for foreign consulates in Zhuhai. With 55 clinical departments, 15 medical technology departments, and over 2,800 employees, it cultivates over 100 medical professionals annually. Annual outpatient visits exceed 2 million, annual surgeries exceed 30,000, and annual discharges exceed 80,000.
