About the Hospital
The First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College was established in 1989 with funding from the Li Ka Shing Foundation. It is the first tertiary Grade A hospital in eastern Guangdong and is now a provincial public large-scale comprehensive hospital and a directly affiliated hospital of Shantou University Medical College. The hospital undertakes national functions of medical technology guidance and emergency rescue in eastern Guangdong, serving as the region's emergency and critical care center and medical technology guidance center. Clinical Medicine is a master's and doctoral training unit with pharmacy and clinical medicine postdoctoral research stations, undertaking a complete medical talent training system of "bachelor-master-doctor-postdoctoral." Adhering to the spirit of "Healer's Benevolent Heart, Cherishing Life," the hospital leads in eastern Guangdong. The current president is Chen Yongsong. The main hospital campus covers 63 mu (approximately 42,000 square meters) with a floor area of nearly 110,000 square meters, operating 1,816 beds. The hospital has successfully established the first medical consortium in eastern Guangdong, comprising 8 medical institutions including the main hospital, Chaonan Minsheng Hospital, Longhu Hospital, Haojiang Hospital, Hepu Hospital, General Practice Branch, Guorui Hospital, and Cardiovascular Hospital, along with 8 community health service centers. It has over 40 clinical medical and technical departments covering all medical disciplines. The hospital employs over 2,000 staff, including more than 300 senior professionals and over 80 doctoral and master's supervisors. It has 2 Guangdong provincial medical key disciplines (Cardiovascular Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology), 16 provincial clinical key specialties, and 2 provincial "Twelfth Five-Year" medical key laboratories. Cardiovascular Medicine, Neurology, Endocrinology, Nephrology, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Thoracic Surgery, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Neonatology, Ophthalmology, and Hematology are among the specialty departments. In 2017, the hospital established the first international medical department in eastern Guangdong, covering approximately 500 square meters with outpatient and inpatient departments, providing full English medical services for foreign nationals, filling the gap in international medical services in eastern Guangdong. In March 2026, the hospital was selected as one of the first batch of pilot hospitals for international medical services in Guangdong Province, further enhancing its international medical service capabilities. The Reproductive Medicine Department is the first institution in eastern Guangdong approved for IVF-ET and related technologies. As the core teaching hospital of Shantou University Medical College, it undertakes medical talent training including undergraduate, graduate, and resident standardized training programs, serving as a National Drug Clinical Trial Institution and National Resident Standardized Training Base. The hospital has undertaken 66 national research projects and 198 provincial projects, published 249 SCI-indexed papers, and received 120 provincial and municipal science and technology awards. It has been honored with titles including "National Top 100 Hospital," "National Trusted Demonstration Hospital," "National Reform and Innovation Hospital," and "National Advanced Unit for Medical and Health System." It is a designated hospital for childhood leukemia and congenital heart disease in Guangdong Province. In October 2023, it became the first designated collection hospital for the China Marrow Donor Program in eastern Guangdong.
