Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, founded on September 8, 1866, is a comprehensive Class-A tertiary hospital directly under the National Health Commission, a hospital (the First Clinical School) affiliated to a "double first-class" university, one of the first Class-A tertiary hospitals and one of the top 100 hospitals in China. The hospital upholds the philosophy of "healing the world with love, uniting the partners with sincerity" and carries forward the spirit of "keeping rigorous and pragmatic, striving for perfection". It is now composed of Main Campus, Orthopaedic Centre, Auto Valley Campus, and Jinyinhu Campus, with 6,400 beds and 49 clinical and paramedical departments. The hospital has 7,718 employees, including 6,859 medical professionals, 723 with senior professional titles, 86 enjoying special allowances from the State Council, and 73 winners of various state-level talent projects. Ten disciplines are national key (cultivated) disciplines including hematology, cardiology, general surgery, urology, and anesthesiology. Twenty-five departments have been selected as national key clinical specialty construction projects. Clinical medicine has entered the top 1‰ of ESI worldwide. In 2015, the first International Outpatient Department in Hubei Province was established. The Auto Valley Campus set up Central China's first international clinic in 2012, with American doctor Mei Xue as the chief general practitioner, offering English, French, and Japanese consultation rooms, serving over 13,000 international patients cumulatively, with direct billing partnerships with over 10 commercial insurance institutions. As a state-level clinical teaching demonstration base, the hospital has 5 first-level discipline doctoral programs and 204 doctoral tutors. The hospital receives approximately 6.7 million outpatient visits, 300,000 inpatient admissions, and performs 120,000 surgeries annually. In 2019, its comprehensive strength entered the top 10 nationwide, winning honors including China Poverty Eradication Award and Asian Hospital Management Award Customer Service Gold Award.
