About the Hospital
The First Hospital of Lanzhou University is a comprehensive tertiary Grade-A hospital integrating medical care, teaching, and research. It holds an A+ rating in the National Tertiary Public Hospital Performance Assessment and serves as an output hospital for the National Regional Medical Center. Founded in 1948 as the Affiliated Hospital of Lanzhou Medical College, it became part of Lanzhou University in 2004 when the medical college merged with the university. Located at No. 1 Donggang West Road, Chengguan District, Lanzhou City, Gansu Province, the hospital covers approximately 130,000 square meters with a building area of 260,000 square meters. It has 57 clinical departments, 10 medical technology departments, 2,686 authorized beds, and 3,276 employees. The hospital holds 8 National Clinical Key Specialties with strong capabilities in cardiology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, critical care medicine, general surgery, thoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, and interventional medicine. The thoracic surgery department has ranked first in Gansu Province for eight consecutive years and among the top five in Northwest China. The cardiovascular surgery department is the largest and strongest cardiac surgery center in Gansu Province, while the interventional medicine department is the largest comprehensive interventional treatment center in Northwest China. The hospital has established cooperative exchanges with more than 30 internationally renowned institutions, including the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization, the International Association for Accelerated Recovery Surgery, the German-Chinese Medical Association, and the Canadian Bethune Medical Development Association. It became the first hospital in China to join the International Association for Accelerated Recovery Surgery, the first unit in China to introduce the Chinese version of the association's data interactive audit system, and the first qualified center in China for hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery ERAS training practice. In 2024, the hospital became the first in Western China to be designated as a "Senior General Surgery Professional Physician Training Center" by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong, obtaining dual certification for international初级 and senior surgeon training. The thoracic surgery department serves as an international single-port thoracoscopic training base and has received over 100 physicians from more than 50 countries and regions for further study. The hospital is the only medical institution in Gansu Province undertaking the National Health Commission's "30 China-Africa Sister Hospital Partnership Mechanism" project, long-term high-quality completion of aid projects to Mali and Burkina Faso. The trauma surgery department has established long-term cooperation with internationally renowned trauma treatment institutions including the University of Regensburg Hospital in Germany, Karolinska Institute in Sweden, Royal Danish Hospital, Nippon Medical School in Japan, and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's James Cook University Hospital, becoming the International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) Lanzhou Training Base. The hospital houses 6 Gansu Provincial International Science and Technology Cooperation Bases, including high-incidence tumors and major chronic disease prevention and control, precision imaging collaborative innovation, coronary heart disease diagnosis and treatment technology and application, thoracic surgery key technology research and development and application, gastric cancer translational medicine and application, and reproductive medicine translational application. As the clinical college of Lanzhou University, the hospital trains doctoral and master's students and serves as the supporting unit for Gansu Provincial Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Diseases, Gansu Provincial Key Laboratory of Gastrointestinal Diseases, Gansu Provincial Key Laboratory of Biological Therapy and Regenerative Medicine, and Gansu Provincial Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine and Embryology, providing high-quality medical services to the people of Gansu Province and surrounding areas.
